About 25 years ago we moved to Mercer County and became neighbors to the Burgers. They were this old couple which lived on the other side of the creek. Interestingly, now that they’re gone, we’ve become the old couple that lives on the other side of the creek – about the same age they were when we moved here.

Our earliest memory of Rosie was of her riding her bicycle in front of our house every school day whenever the weather allowed. She had a pole sticking up from her bike with a flag at the top to make her more noticeable to the passing traffic.

We came to learn that she had tuberculosis when she was young, and keeping active like this kept her in good health. Plus she liked to ride bike, and the ride into New Boston was a beautiful ride. Not too long after we moved in, they cut down some of the old trees growing up out of the road and put in a smooth black-topped surface – all the way from New Boston right up to our corner – no doubt to make Rosie’s ride smoother than that cow path that used to be there – nobody who ever drove that road can forget it.

We early discovered what Rosie and we had in common – the Chicago Cubs. Cubs baseball seemed somehow to come up in most conversations. It didn’t matter whether the Cubs were in contention or not, or if it was off-season. We finally went to a game in Chicago a couple of years ago and she loaned us some Cub attire to wear.

For several years we would take extensive trips to education conventions during the spring, and Rosie would come by and feed our dogs every day.

Our son Hans bought a motorcycle, and Rosie was first in line to take a ride around the section with him.

The New Years before last we had a costume party. Rosie came dressed as Little Bo Peep – and won the prize for the best costume.

In early January Rosie had been sick for a while – she thought she had a flu. One Sunday evening Laurie went over to check on her. Rosie wasn’t doing well at all, and Laurie offered to drive her to the hospital, but Rosie insisted on taking an ambulance because, as she put it, if you walk in, they’ll dilly dally around and you won’t get their attention, but if you come in an ambulance they treat you right away. So Laurie rode in the ambulance with her to the Muscatine hospital. A couple of days later, we got the bad news that Rosie had cancer and had only a few weeks to live.

Now that the two greatest Cub fans – Ron Santo and Rosie Burger – have passed on to root from another dimension, perhaps that will be enough to finally bring the Cubs a World Series victory. After all, they’ve got about the best hitting in the majors and if you take away a few bad innings their pitching looks good. It’s all those injuries, don’t you know, that’s been holding them back. Why, we aren’t even to the All-Star break yet. Well, you might not understand this kind of rant, but Rosie always did – it means keep on rootin’ ’cause the Cubs haven’t been mathematically eliminated yet and “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

We miss Rosie. Go Cubs.

Dear All,

It’s the sixth day after the earthquake and the tsunami that has rocked Japan to her ancient core. The National Police Agency says it has confirmed 3,771 deaths in 12 prefectures and 8,181 people remain unaccounted for in six prefectures. Rescue operations continue in the devastated areas, with 80,000 Self-Defense Forces personnel and police officers mobilized. Thousands of foreigners have been applying for re-entry permits in preparation for evacuation from Japan. Emperor spoke to the nation for the first time yesterday. (This is the first time in the country’s history an emperor has spoken to the public on television.)

Suppose you were allowed the time or the space to word just one prayer for all of Japan right now. How would you pray? This is how John Wright is praying. John is an MK who ministers here in Japan. He is blessed with wonderful heart and a sharp mind. (He’s one of the few people I’ve ever met who can preach and teach with only a Greek New Testament, speaking in Japanese.)

Over the last 24 hours I have had a growing sense of the need to communicate a single priority prayer request for Japan. I would really appreciate it if everyone who receives this message passes it on to their own network of people. We need to unite around this request. Here it is:

Pray that the winds begin to blow eastward and stay low, out of the jet stream–toward the Pacific ocean and away from the land mass of Japan–and continue to blow EAST until the nuclear crisis is over. This is critical. Staying low, and eastward is essential for limiting the damage.

As you know, the four nuclear reactors in Fukushima are all deteriorating, and levels of radioactive emissions are rising. This has the potential to directly affect a large part of the nation, if reactors continue the meltdown process and emissions blow directly over the land. A strong, consistent, prevailing wind to the east would have a profound protective effect on future radioactive emissions. In addition, if the emissions rise to the jet stream, they will be carried as far away as Europe.

In the history of Japan a “divine wind” has played a pivotal role in the survival of the nation several times. Now is the time for Christians to arise, and lay hold of God for a powerful east wind to protect this land, and all the countries that lie to the north, west, and south. The east is the only direction without heavily populated land masses.

As you pray for physical wind, also include the request for the “wind” of the Holy Spirit to blow with great power over this land and create a spiritual revival that will remake Japan from the inside out. That spiritual wind is just as important as the physical wind–these are two aspects of one crucial prayer request for this nation.

Let us all meet at the throne of grace, and agree together for the physical/spiritual wind that will deliver and transform this nation into God’s chosen vessel, prepared to reveal His glory by serving his eternal purpose of making disciples of all the nations, until He comes.

Carlton Walker

Here are some of the winners in the International Pun Contest:

1. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at him and says, I’m sorry, sir, only one Carrion allowed per passenger.

2. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent.

3. Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says I’ve lost my electron. The other says Are you sure? The first replies Yes, I’m positive.

4. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

5. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. But why? they asked, as they moved off. Because, he said, I can’t stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer.

6. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ….A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

7. There was the person who sent ten different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did!

Sono Harris died on July 4. Her son Joel wrote this song for her right before she died.

GOODNIGHT, MAMA

Written July 3, 2010 by Joel Harris

Walking through your door, sitting on your bed

Talking about everything together

We’ll talk into the night, till everything seems clear again

And there’s only one thing left to say…

Goodnight, mama, I’m so glad that you’re here to talk to

Sleep well, I’ll see you soon

Thank you, Jesus, for a mother who pours herself out

Always something more to do

Walking through your door, bringing you your food

Talking about how you slept last night

We only have a little while, till you need to rest again

And there’s only one thing left to say…

Goodnight, mama, I’m so glad that I got to see you

Sleep well, I’ll be back soon

Thank you, Jesus, for a mother who poured her life out

Please fill her anew

Walking through your door, to see you one more time

Thinking about all the times we’ve shared

Not much longer now, because He’s calling you home

And there’s only one thing left to say…

Goodbye, mama, I’m so glad that I got to know you

Farewell, I’ll see you soon

Take her, Jesus, to a place with no pain or sickness

To heaven with you

Subject: Dear Friends of Gregg and Sono Harris and Family

Dear Friends of the Harris Family,

I am sending this message to you with confidence that you will act and pass it along and together we can make a difference!

Over the years as a home educating father, I have been mentored, encouraged, and inspired by Gregg & Sono Harris and their incredibly talented family: Joshua, Joel, Alex, Brett, Sarah, Isaac and James. You are probably familiar with Gregg and Sono’s tireless efforts to encourage and create in-roads for homeschooling over the last three decades, Josh gave young adults a biblical approach to dating by penning I Kissed Dating Good-Bye and most recently God has used Alex and Brett to encourage youth to Do Hard Things.

About a month ago, I was in a hotel room in South Africa when I first heard that Sono was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. I can remember dropping to my knees in my room and crying out to God to have mercy on her.

How has the Harris family dealt with this life-changing event? Although difficult beyond words, they have walked through this with the same grace and courage as they have other challenges; by seeking and trusting in almighty God. You can read Joshua’s latest updates on his blog here.

At the end of last week I spoke with Gregg. He shared that God has been very gracious toward Sono in that she has experienced very little pain, however, he also shared that her body is weakening and she speaks of seeing Jesus soon. Although they have not been given any indication as to timing, Gregg said that it could be any time now.

As the devoted husband and Godly family leader that he is, Gregg has stepped down from his speaking engagements and away from his daily business responsibilities to care for his wife. Obviously this has taken a major toll on their household income and the medical bills are mounting. Gregg mentioned to me that he believed some home school organizations were trying to gather donations for the family. According to Gregg “now is better than later,” and I believe the truth is – action needs to happen quite quickly to help save this dear family from more distress.

Each year in his annual “How to End the Year” blog, Doug Phillips, President of Vision Forum Ministries, reminds me to remember those individuals and ministries who have invested in my family’s life. In Luke 17, Jesus teaches us of those ungrateful recipients of blessings who simply went their way without demonstrating gratitude, and Doug’s challenge stems from that concept. “When was the last time I responded to their investment in my life with gratitude, blessings, and even money?”

If the Harris family has been an encouragement or an inspiration to you and your family, would you consider responding to their investment in your life at this time of need?

You can also donate to Noble Institute, marking the donation Friends of Sono Harris Fund.

It is my prayer that we, as the body of Christ, would pour out our love and comfort and help ‘bear one anothers burdens’ with the Harris’.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to forward to others as you feel led.

Grace and peace,
