Already Gone legitimately calls into question some of our folk wisdom and pet presuppositions about church and ministry. The last chapter of Already Gone is a call of accountability for parents and church leaders. Already Gone is a valuable resource and I highly recommend it.

Statistics of Disengagement from Church

“twenty-somethings – 61% … – had been churched … during their teen years but … are now spiritually disengaged” “20% of those who were spiritually active during high school are maintaining a similar level of commitment.” “[If this trend continues] we are one generation away from the evaporation of church as we know it.”

England, once evangelist to the world – “only 2.5 percent of the population is attending Bible-based churches.” “Where Europe is today spiritually, America will be tomorrow – and for the same reasons …”

Children from evangelical families, 95% attended church in elementary-middle school; 55 % in high school; 11% in college. Surprise: So most children were actually gone from church in high school, not college. “We are losing many more people by middle school and … high school than … in college.” 39.8% first doubted the Bible in middle school; 43.7% first doubted in high school; 10.6% first doubted in college.

Sunday School’s Negative Effect

Irrelevance

Of 60% students who no longer go to church, part say the Bible is irrelevant, the other part say the church is irrelevant.

Applying the Truth of God’s Word is What’s Relevant

Church Traditions

Nor do I think we came from monkeys, by the way… That’s another piece of garbage. What the hell’s it based on? We couldn’t've come from anything–fish, maybe, but not monkeys. I don’t believe in the evolution of fish to monkeys to men. Why aren’t monkeys changing into men now? It’s absolute garbage. It’s absolutely irrational garbage, as mad as the ones who believe the world was made only four thousand years ago, the fundamentalists. That and the monkey thing are both as insane as the apes standing up suddenly. The early men are always drawn like apes, right? Because that fits in the theory we have been living with since Darwin. I don’t buy that monkey business. [Singing] “Too much monkey business…” [Laughing] I don’t buy it. I’ve got no basis for it and no theory to offer, I just don’t buy it. Something other than that. Something simpler. I don’t buy anything other than “It always was and ever shall be.” I can’t conceive of anything less or more. The other theories change all the time. They set up these idols and then they knock them down. It keeps all the old professors happy in the university. It gives them something to do. I don’t know if there’s any harm in it except they ram it down everybody’s throat. Everything they told me as a kid has already been disproved by the same type of “experts” who made them up in the first place. There.

Signs and Seasons: Understanding the Elements of Classical Astronomy by Jay Ryan

Black and Yellow Argiope is an orb-web spider, meaning it builds a circular web which it both lives in and uses to catch food. Notice the stabilimenta in the center of the web. Only diurnal (active in the daytime) spiders use stabilimenta. It’s not known exactly what purpose this zigzag pattern serves. Scientists are divided on the issue. It could do one or more of the following:

1. Strengthen the structure of the web.
2. Camouflage the spider
3. Help to attract flying insects by reflecting ultraviolet light.
4. Startle predators and keep them from bumping or flying into and destroying the web, although hungry spiders are less likely to build stabilimenta.

I wonder if perhaps the design of the stabilimenta is in any way specific to each particular spider.

When Argiope aurantia is disturbed, she vibrates her web. This makes her appear larger and more threatening. It sure scares me when she does this. It makes me think she’s getting ready to jump on me, and I’ll always back away.

Harvey told me I should just go out and study them on my own today, but, no, it’s no fun learning something new if you don’t have a few little munchkins following along.

Don’t let the kitchen floor, or the weeding, or the tomato juice canning, or the shopping, or the spelling workbook interfere with the fun of real learning.
