I certainly agree that providence as a theological category is about God's involvement with the perfection and completion of creation. The trouble I have is the implication that God would cause suffering. This would seem to contradict what we Christians believe about the very nature of God. Are free will and self will not really the sources of suffering and pain? When we experience pain, we repent-change direction-and return to seek the will of God. I don't think God ever causes us to stumble for any purpose, but the occasion of our stumbling and the requisite repentance, actually deepen our faith. We return to find God waiting on us.

Resurrection itself is about the fact that God can be present in the midst of the most difficult pieces of life and, in fact, redeem those moments. Jesus died, not as a result of a plan per se, but as the result of His absolute trust in God and His unwillingness to be deterred. The resurrection is God's yes to trust and faith.

Peace,
Chris+

Well said Mike:

"The next time one of your sons or daughters does something shocking, sinful, or shameful, I encourage you to prayerfully consider God’s plans in it."

this was written before Monday...this is something we need to ask ourselves now... "can we see God in it? And the answer should be yes we can.

Excellent post - little will bring you to your knees faster to acknowledge who happens to be God and who does not other than your kids or your health - and I have been stubborn enough apparently to have experienced both. However, what I have come to realize is that there is great peace rather than frustration and fear in submitting and embracing God's sovereign nature - not often do I get it right but the more often I do, the more peaceful and content I am irregardless of the circumstances.

I enjoyed this post. I agree with Mr. Evans that we can tend to forget the sovereignty of God when it comes to the behavior of our own children, thank you for that reminder. But what about, raise him up in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it?

Dear Laurie,

Thank you for posting this! It is exactly what many of us need to hear. Too often in the homeschool community, in my opinion, the salvation of our children is placed upon the fathers and the mothers, and sovereignty is taken away from the Lord our God. What a crushing burden to place upon people what only the Lord can do. Now I firmly believe that the Scriptures command fathers to teach their children of the Lord and to raise them up in His ways, but who the Lord will add to His Church is truly up to Him.

It also seems to me that the hs community promotes a certain kind of perfection from parents and their children and leaves little room for the trials and tribulations that Jesus tells us we will face on earth. Often it is not preached that we need to be constantly on our knees, praying without ceasing, as we live and trust in the Lord and His perfect will for our lives. Too much emphasis is placed on a step-by-step plan of how to have the perfect family and children.

Mr. Evans really hits the mark when he repeats "God is in control." We know that whatever we are experiencing in our lives at this moment, it is the Lord's will and we must give thanks for it. "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (1Th 5:18) Sometimes it is hard to say "Thank you, Lord!" for chronic illness or for a wayward child or for an unbearable loss of of loved one but we must learn to do this and trust in Him and give Him the glory for all things.

What a breath of fresh air to hear the truth proclaimed from Scripture by Mr. Evans. May all who read your posted article be abundantly blessed by it!

Love in Christ,
Christine
